Foundations of Outdoor Learning


This 40 hour training course is designed for those wanting to engage children and young people in outdoor learning from a school field or similar environment. The program is designed to equip educators with the necessary skills and understanding to discern individual differences and to be able to deliver a program using the neccesary skills and aproaches to meet the needs of the learners.


This training can act as a stand alone module or can act as a foundation to our other courses, such as the Beach or Forest School Leadership training.  

ABOUT THE COURSE

The course is divided in one of two ways:

(either over 6 days training or 12 half days)


1. Training


The course provides training in the following areas:

Safe fire lighting and outdoor cooking

Tool safety (including knives, saws and axes)

Rope work and shelter building

Personality profiling and understanding individual differences

Hoilistic learning approaches

Activity development

Theories of learning and bringing the best out in your learners

Risk management and group leadership


2. Post Training Experience (for stand alone training only)

Timescale: 8 - 12 weeks.

As part of the stand alone course you will be expected to do a number of assignments designed to equip you in your role (if you are using this as a springboard to the Beach School or Forest School L3 programmes this does not apply). This work can be submitted through our online system and you will be given help, advice and feedback where needed. You will also be expected to gain experience assisting in running outdoor learning sessions. This can either be done through an existing contact you may have or we will assist in linking you up with an existing provider.

Where is the course run from?

This course can either be run from a school grounds or from our 10 acre wood, situated 15 minutes outside of Newquay (details on booking). We have a couple of large shelters suitable to keep the best of the Cornish weather off for classroom sessions and for the rest of the time we will be out and about! We have a compost loo (a nice one) and a small forest kitchen with hot and cold drinks available throughout.

Who is the course run by?

Our head trainer is Jonathan Burfoot who has worked in outdoor education for the last 20+ years. Beginning by studying a degree in Outdoor and Environmental Education he then went on to work in a number of settings, teaching and training children, young people and adults which included seven years as an Outdoor Education teacher with Cornwall College. Jonathan set up Newquay Forest School in 2013 with his wife Anna and together they have a heart for empowering people to be the best they can be using the outdoors as a vehicle for change.

What are the entry requirements?

The minimum age requirement for this course is 19. Applicants should also have substantial background experience in children and young people’s work.

There is a £100 non refundable deposit to reserve your place on the training which will be taken off the final figure unless choosing to pay monthly.

There are two ways to pay.

Option 1 - Upfront payment of by BACS or cheque.

Option 2 - One year plan - £100 non refundable deposit + 12 Monthly payments of £50 per month.

Term time training - Runs 6 Wednesdays 09:30 - 16:30

Summer intensive training course - Runs Monday-Monday (excluding weekend)
